Machinists Announce 2207 Rally to Support Transportation Workers6/21/2005
The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace
Workers (IAM) today announced delegates at its 2005 North American
Transportation Conference have authorized IAM leaders to organize a
massive labor rally in Washington, D.C. prior to the start of
presidential primaries.
"If a presidential candidate expects to be elected, he or she
has to first address the issues of this country's transportation
workers," said GVP Roach. "Our membership is tired of the lax federal
oversight of foreign repair stations, the government's campaign to
destroy transportation workers through forced concessions, their refusal
to provide long-term funding for Amtrak and the complete failure of the
National Mediation Board to facilitate labor agreements."
"Working families in North America demand the opportunity to be
heard by their elected officials and to hold them accountable," said a
resolution unanimously approved by the delegates. "The International
Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers should organize and
coordinate a rally in Washington, D.C. to articulate those issues that
are of paramount importance to working families." The complete
resolution is available at http://transportation.goiam.org.
"This is a grass-roots effort inspired and lead by activist,
members," said Roach. "As candidates prepare for presidential primaries,
the Machinists Union will ensure our members' issues are part of the
debate. A presidential candidate must earn the endorsement of
transportation labor, and his or her work to convince us of their worth
must begin immediately."
All AFL-CIO transportation unions and member unions of the
London-based International Transportation Workers Federation will be
invited to participate in the rally.
